How to choose a tent

Capacity, waterproofing, poles and ventilation explained.

01

Capacity

Tent ratings assume people lying shoulder to shoulder. Size up by one person for comfort, or by two if you camp with children or lots of gear.

02

Waterproofing

Look for the hydrostatic head figure on the fly. Around 2000mm handles normal rain; 3000mm and above suits exposed or longer trips.

03

Poles

Aluminium poles are lighter and more durable than fibreglass, and they bend rather than snap in wind.

04

Ventilation

In hot or humid places, mesh panels and a fly that sits off the inner tent reduce condensation and keep you cooler.

05

Setup style

Instant and pop-up tents pitch in minutes — ideal for car camping and beaches. Classic pole tents pack smaller and handle wind better.
