Power at camp: power banks, stations and solar
Work out what you need to charge, then pick the right size.
List your devices
Phones, headlamps, a lantern and a small fan are very different from a fridge or coffee machine. Write down what you'll run and for how long.
Power banks
For phones and headlamps on a one- or two-night trip, a 20,000mAh power bank is usually enough for a couple of people.
Power stations
Portable power stations are rated in watt-hours (Wh). Add up each device's watts × hours of use and choose a station with about 20% spare capacity.
Solar panels
Solar keeps a station topped up on longer trips. Real output is often well below the label, so angle the panel at the sun and move it as the day goes on.
Jump starters
For desert and off-road trips, a compact jump starter is cheap insurance against a flat vehicle battery far from help.
Heat and batteries
Lithium batteries dislike heat. Keep them out of direct sun and never leave them on a car dashboard.
